For 32 years, I watched brilliant colleagues walk out the door — taking decades of hard-won knowledge with them. My mission ever since has been simple: make sure that wisdom doesn't disappear.

A Light for
Others' Wisdom

A note from Carl

I spent 32 years inside one of the largest insurance companies in the country, watching the same story play out again and again: a brilliant colleague, decades of hard-won expertise, and a retirement party — followed by a knowledge gap no org chart could fill.

As a Business Architect, I built the systems that caught that knowledge before it walked out the door. I mentored hundreds of professionals. I led succession planning for entire departments. And somewhere in that work, I found my real purpose.

Shining a light on the wisdom of others is my purpose and my passion in life.

Everyone carries wisdom worth preserving. I'm here to make sure it doesn't disappear.

Building a Career
on Listening Well

Thirty-two years, one company, and a slow discovery of purpose

Carl gardening

I joined State Farm in 1986 and stayed for 32 years, working my way into a role most people have never heard of: Business Architect. My job, at its heart, was translation — turning the tacit, hard-won knowledge in someone's head into something an entire organization could rely on.

Over those three decades, I supervised underwriting teams, redesigned processing audits, and built an internal platform for capturing business knowledge before it walked out the door with departing experts. I developed a curriculum that trained 160 business architects and built a coaching program that cut new architects' learning curve in half.

But the work that stayed with me most was quieter than any of that: sitting across from someone who'd spent 20 or 30 years mastering something, and simply listening long enough for them to realize how much they actually knew.

Listening is a prerequisite to understanding, and understanding is a prerequisite to analyzing. You cannot apply knowledge without understanding it — and you cannot understand it without truly listening first.

Outside of work, my life is full in the ways that matter most. I especially love spending time outdoors — helping friends with their landscaping projects has become one of my favorite ways to stay active, useful, and grounded. There's something deeply satisfying about digging in and helping something grow, in a garden or otherwise. I also travel across the country whenever I can to visit family and old friends, which keeps me refreshed and reminds me what all this work is really for.

Wisdom Disappears
Unless Someone Catches It

Organizations sit on a wealth of unconscious competence — the deep, often unrecorded expertise that lives in the minds of their best people. It's the rule-of-thumb knowledge built from years of trial and error, the kind no manual ever fully captures.

When that knowledge walks out the door — through retirement, resignation, or simple oversight — organizations lose more than a job title. They lose judgment, intuition, and decades of hard-won pattern recognition.

I developed an expert interviewing approach built on a simple sequence: listen, understand, analyze. It's disciplined enough to surface real expertise, and flexible enough to let the conversation go wherever the knowledge actually lives — rather than where a rigid questionnaire assumes it should.

Preserving that knowledge, and sharing it wisely across an organization, isn't just good practice. It's how organizations stay resilient enough to adapt and thrive.

Putting a Life's Work
Into Words

Two books, currently in progress

After three decades spent helping organizations capture what their people know, I'm now doing the same for readers — distilling both my professional expertise and my personal faith journey into two books.

Living in Joy with GodLight

A practical, uplifting guide for anyone seeking a deeper connection with God and a more joyful, purposeful life. Built around four dimensions of GodLight — Motivation, Perception, Reflection, and Assistance — the book offers a clear path to overcoming fear, deepening relationships, and becoming a living expression of God's light in the world.

Shining a Light on Wisdom

A practical guide to tapping the unconscious competence hidden inside organizations. Drawing on decades of expert interviewing experience, the book lays out a flexible, listen-understand-analyze approach for capturing the wisdom of top performers before it's lost.

Thirty-Two Years
of Catching What Matters

From underwriting operations to organization-wide knowledge systems

I spent my entire corporate career at State Farm, starting in 1986 and rising to the role of Business Architect — a results-oriented strategist working across business units to align processes, people, and decision points with organizational goals.

Along the way, I built an internal platform to capture essential business knowledge from subject matter experts, redesigned processing audits to recognize strengths rather than just flag deficiencies, and developed a leadership coaching guide grounded in the traits of genuinely effective executives.

Some of the work I'm proudest of: a knowledge-transfer approach that assessed and prioritized 80% of critical knowledge gaps across 225 associates, and a companywide expert-system rollout that meaningfully improved the quality and speed of customer service.

I also built a training curriculum for 160 business architects that pushed acceptance criteria rates above 95% — cutting project delays from a month down to a week.

Today, I bring that same discipline to consulting — helping organizations and individuals capture what they know, package it with clarity, and pass it forward with confidence.

The Values That
Guide Everything

These aren't abstractions to me — they're the habits of mind I built over three decades of listening to people describe what they know, and why it matters.

Legacy

Everyone carries wisdom worth preserving. Making sure it doesn't disappear is work worth doing well.

Deep Listening

You cannot understand without truly listening first, and you cannot apply knowledge without understanding it.

Mentorship

Building others' competencies and creating safe spaces for honest thinking is some of the most valuable work there is.

Faith

A deeper connection with God brings clarity, gratitude, and lasting joy — principles I try to live, not just write about.

Growing Things

Whether it's a garden or a career, I find real joy in the patient work of helping something take root and thrive.

Patience

Resisting the urge to jump to answers is hard for a problem-solver. It's also where the real knowledge is found.

Why I'm Here

Your best people know more than your org chart will ever show. The question is whether anyone catches it in time.

I've watched this story play out for over three decades: a brilliant colleague retires or moves on, and with them goes years of judgment, intuition, and hard-won pattern recognition that no manual ever recorded.

I built my career finding ways to catch that knowledge before it disappeared — through structured succession planning, expert interviewing, and knowledge-transfer systems built for real organizations, not theoretical ones.

Whether you're facing an upcoming retirement wave, trying to onboard new talent faster, or simply want to make sure your organization's hard-earned wisdom survives beyond any one person — this is the work I do.

If you're ready to capture what your organization already knows before it walks out the door — I'm here to help.
